Operational impacts of DER integration in the SWIS
The South West Interconnected System (SWIS) is an islanded power system that serves roughly 1.1 million customers in the southwest region of Western Australia. With average and peak system loads of 2.2 GW and 4 GW respectively, while having installed DER capacity of over 1.6 GW, the SWIS is at the forefront of DER integration in a medium scale islanded system. However, high levels of DER penetration bring with it a number of operational challenges. This webinar outlines these challenges from a system operator’s perspective discussing topics such as managing volatility, emerging risks in frequency and voltage control and the need for more flexible generation.
This webinar is the seventh in a series of eight webinars on consumer-centric energy, being held between October 2020 and May 2021, co-hosted by the Energy Transition Hub and the Climate and Energy College, sponsored by the Victorian Clean Technology Fund.
