What is a human-centred electricity system?
Australia’s 20th century electricity system has operated well as highly-centralised and one-directional grid that has supplied consumers who were largely passive However, the combined forces of decarbonisation, decentralisation, democratisation and digitisation are leading to a very different grid of the 21st century. While there is much talk about customers ‘being at the centre’, this presentation will explore the question of ‘what is a human-centred electricity system’.
This webinar is the fifth in a series of eight webinars on consumer-centric energy, being held between October 2020 and February 2021, co-hosted by the Energy Transition Hub and the Climate and Energy College, sponsored by the Victorian Clean Technology Fund
Mark Paterson is Chief Strategy Officer of Strategen Global and Managing Director of the Strategen Australia/Pacific practice. As a recognised thought-leader in whole-system grid transformation, Mark has played key roles supporting Australia’s transition to become one of the world’s most deeply decentralized electricity systems at CSIRO, Energex and Horizon Power.
Mark led the CSIRO/ENA Electricity Network Transformation Roadmap project which involved over 200 stakeholders in co-developing transition pathways for the 2017-27 decade. This national project spanned customer, technology, economic, tariff, business model and regulatory domains and was supported by extensive techno-economic modelling. An integrated suite of agreed actions was delivered and over AU$100bn of economic value was identified through whole-system optimization.
Mark is Co-chair of the Clean Energy Council’s Distributed Energy Leadership Forum and an Associate Member of the GridWise Architecture Council (US DoE) focused on Transactive Energy Systems. He is also Emeritus Chair of the AS/NZS4755 suite of demand response standards.
